This is how you furnish and design your patio or balcony

3 May, 2023

How do I create a cosy and homely environment on your patio or balcony? How do I use plants and furnish in the best way? Which material should I use? And how do I integrate glass railings and stainless steel railings in the best way?

In the second blogpost of three – in collaboration with the garden engineer John Block, we discuss how to best furnish and design your patio or balcony for the summer season.

Plan your patio

The peak of summer is to spend time on the balcony or in the garden with your family and friends. Maybe you have just moved into a new house or want to make new surfaces in your garden? Before you start planning your patio there are a few things you should think about.

Look at how you usually use the place – where do you drag your chair for the most sunlight? Or is it important to get shade to the place? Should it be a split place both for hanging out and to use for sunbathing? Or should it only be a place for a dining table? This plays a part in how you place your furniture and which type of furniture you use. For social get-togethers you can choose to build a placebuilt sofa and combine it with chairs and armchairs that offers some flexibility to the furnishing.

John names an element that plays a big role in how your patio appears. If you choose to place a terrace, it is important to think about how you place the planks.

“ Depending on how you place the planks, the place will appear differently. If the planks are placed vertically will the room become “smaller”. If you place them along the viewpoint the room appears very long, which can be beneficial if you have a nice view for example.”

rostfritt glasräcke

Here the customer chose a stainless glass railing with a hand railing to not hide the amazing view. In combination with this, have the customer put the planks in viewpoint, which makes the terrace feel airy and big.

Consistency in garden planning

A common mistake John sees in garden planning is that people “dabs”. An example of this is an overuse of pots.

“ Often you can see about 50 pots standing over the whole terrace for different purposes and with different content. This can easily give a messy impression. Instead, use fewer, bigger pots and put more plants in the same pot or why not a tree or a bush? And why not an uneven amount of pots for a more harmonic impression. ”

Overall, maybe you have all the parts you need in a garden, but sometimes it can feel messy and incoherent. The problem here is that you miss the red thread. You should therefore bring together the parts. This you can do through a specific glass railing, a trellis construction, a plant or a constant colour. It creates familiarity and you become calmer because of it.

aluminiumräcke svart

Here, the customer chose to keep the same colour palette on chosen parts of the house. Aluminium railing with coloured laminated glass in black RAL.

John advises about meeting a specific element already in the entrance, maybe a trellis, glass railing or a specific colour to make a mark immediately. Afterwards you meet the same material or colour in the front garden near an outdoor shower or an outdoor kitchen. In that way you create a red thread through the garden.

Small changes that creates a homely place

We have gone through how you in the best way create a patio for larger gardens. But which challenges and possibilities are there for small outdoor spaces like balconies and courtyards?

Small gardens also require their thought process as regards design and room division. And just because the room is smaller does not mean that it is easier to portray. Often it is the opposite. But with small means you can create a place that feels cosy and secure. A courtyard is often surrounded by tall buildings with a lot of windows that face the courtyard. Here you can easily feel exposed. Then it can be effective to use elevated planting beds, trees, pergolas and trellises. Tall windbreakers with opal glass or with coloured laminated glass can prevent others looking in.

Balconies is however a chapter on its own. This is still your private area and is in direct extension to your home environment. Here you maybe want to erase the barrier between inside and outside and use the balcony as an extra room. Depending on where your balcony is it can influence the furnishing. Is it an apartment complex or is it your house out against the garden?

In an apartment complex you maybe want to make sure others can not look inside, then you can put up trellis on the sides of the balcony, to maximise the space with seatings and create a cosy atmosphere with pots and plants. Balconies are also a place exposed to more weather. Sunlight and strong winds can become an issue. It requires plants that are resilient to those conditions.

For balconies and houses that are privately owned you have a bigger opportunity to make changes . Maybe you have an old tree railing that needs an update, with glass and clamps you can keep the old wooden poles but give a lift to the balcony. Or you want to update the whole balcony railing, and then a glass railing is the perfect alternative that lets in a lot of light and does not make the balcony feel cramped.

stolpfritt glasräcke

With the glass only railing you let the balcony feel airy and give an exclusive.

On balconies, roof terraces and courtyards you still have big opportunities to create your green environment in an otherwise boring and urban environment. You can always create better conditions for the plants with bigger planters and pots, and have the courage to use other plants than flowers.

This is how you maximise your outdoor area

We ask John how you in the best way maximise your outdoor area through functional elements like seating, lighting and vegetation.

First you need to think about your own needs. Which needs do you have? Do you have a big family? Friend group? Need a home for contemplation and recovery or more social areas for dinners and so on? And how does the place look?

According to John, the first step that he does as a designer is to look at the place. Make a simple analysis of the place to evaluate the nature, but also take the age of the house and surrounding area into consideration. Are there other elements to take into account, such as disturbing sounds, wind or dampness? And then try to solve those issues in new and exciting ways that maybe are not the most obvious.

When you have made an analysis you can go to the usage of the ground. In which direction is the sun and evening sun, is it possible to establish seating there? And why not place chilling areas further out?

“It is not often you get to sit and look at your house from far away! I definitely think that there should be some seating further away from the house to increase the usage of the ground. And is there a way to bind together the different spaces on the ground in some way? Things like vegetation, planters or hedges, trellis and railings could be helpful as room dividers.”

During warm summer evenings we want to be able to continue experiencing our outdoor areas even though it gets darker. Then you can of course use different kinds of outdoor lighting to create a striking experience of the place. Often it becomes a whole different garden when you add lighting, you get one garden during the day and another during the evening/night.

Though, it is important not to overuse the lighting, it should be planned with consideration so the garden does not become like Las Vegas (if that is not your style of course). It should also not disturb animal life in the garden, since many animals and insects are active during the night. After all, we share all the space with other small guests.

Which railing material should I use for my garden?

Before you choose which type of railing you want to order, you should check which type of material is used for the appearance of your house. Even which feeling you want to achieve plays a role. Do you want a cosy, cool, calming, uplifting, romantic, modern or maybe classy?

Glass railings are incredibly effective since they can be flexible in how they are interpreted and can also, in a stylish way, frame in a place. Frameless glass railings that attach in a wall or terrace can work in many different places with different impressions or style since they are not always eye-catching. Or if you want a clearer structure since it fits with the rest of the design and then choose a glass railing with clear edges and clamps.

The advantage with the Balustardestore is that you can adapt the railing after the house or place where you want it and not the opposite. With infinite choices on both colour, form and material, and even adaptations after your measurements which further creates a red thread though your garden design. Match the railings colour with the same colour that you already have on your windows and doors.

John also mentions that he has a few customers that have used different kinds of railings on different places in their gardens.

“Let us say that throughout there is a white wooden railing that is recurring in the garden. But between those spaces inside the garden we maybe want something else to create something to protect people from falling, but for that to be seen as little as possible maybe we would choose a slender wrought iron railing or glass railing for it to be as much see through as possible.”

Outer or inner corner for your railing

27 April, 2023

When ordering a railing from us, we need to know whether the corners are outer or inner corners.

Why do we want to know the corner type?

We need to know because in some cases, we need to add or subtract from the sides depending on the corner type. This enables us to correctly calculate the dimensions of each part so the final delivery meets your requirements.

We are aware that it can be a bit tricky to grasp what is an inner and an outer corner, so we would give some examples to help.

Study the inside of a railing

When we are talking about the corners, we always see them from the “inside” of the railing. Imagine that you are standing on the side that the railing will frame. If it is a terrace or balcony, you need to imagine you are standing on it. An outer corner thus “points” outwards, while an inner corner “points” inwards.

´Outer and inner corner

The image above illustrates a staircase that should have a railing at the sides of the stair opening. Side 1 ends at the wall and side 3 ends where the stairs descend.

In this case, side 1-2 is an inner corner and side 2-3 is an outer corner.

Corners that are not 90 degrees

Even if the corners are not 90 degrees, they still count as outside or inside corners.

Above is image from our measurement templates where we illustrate inner and outer corners for examples that are not 90 degrees.

Wind Protection in glass

27 April, 2023

You can also enhance your privacy with glass wind protection if you select the opal glass option. The railing can also support higher sections to counteract the wind and help to create a cosier space. Check out our design tool to see what see suits you best.

The wind protection can be fitted to the stainless steel glass railing or the aluminium Alu Classic railing, with a height of between 160 cm and 180 cm.

In order to make handling such large sections of glass manageable and to help with delivery, the wind protection is made in sections that are 80 cm wide. If you combine it with a glass railing in any of our standard heights (80, 90, 100, or 110 cm), the rest of the railing will automatically adjust so that the total width fits your measurements perfectly!

The wind protector is always made of tempered laminated glass, in order to resist poor weather, wind and other stresses.

Do you live in a windswept cabin by the sea, or just want to create a sheltered corner on the patio or balcony so you can sit back with a good book, no matter how breezy it is? Then this is the solution for you!

Try designing a railing with wind protection! You can choose between supports in stainless steel or aluminium.

We also have windshield in glass that are height-adjustable – Alu Flex glass railing.

Create a cosy patio with a custom made railing

27 April, 2023

Relaxing at home, whilst enjoying the warmth outside. The home and garden blend into one, as the winter chill recedes. These spaces add both a relaxing space for friends and family, and added value to your home, especially when they are carefully designed and blend in seamlessly with the surroundings.

When it comes to creating an outdoor space that feels open and inviting, there is no better option than a stylish glass railing. Here are five advantages of glass railings for any home.

1. Unbeatable view

As you relax with a drink, a glass railing provides an unimpeded view for you to savour. An open view of their surroundings is one of the best qualities people appreciate about their glass railings.

2. Bright and spacious

A transparent railing brings many advantages. Without wooden or metal rails obscuring the view, your outdoor space feels more open, brighter and spacious. Not only can you look out freely, but light can flood in without being blocked.

3. Exclusive appearance

Glass is a versatile and attractive material that blends in with a wide range of surroundings with ease. Räckesbutiken has models in aluminium, stainless steel, only-glass railing as well as various glass and clamp fasteners for existing supports. All of our models offer the same timeless design with crisp and clean lines. These qualities will add value to your living space, both as a place to relax and enjoy, but also a home improvement that will attract other people in the future.

4. Easy to maintain

All home owners know that maintenance consumes time, energy and money. The severe winters take a toll on the wooden elements of our houses. With a glass railing, it is one less thing to worry about. Glass and metal are both highly weather resistant and easy to maintain. Less time maintaining aspects of your home, means more time relaxing on the balcony or outdoors.

5. Easy to order and install

Home improvements often look great when complete, but we do not see the blood, sweat and tears that went into making it work. At Räckesbutiken, we make everything as easy as possible for you. You only need to decide on the type of railing with any optional extras and then send us the measurements to complete the order in a simple click. Once you’ve ordered, our free delivery will include all the parts, instruction manual, links to helpful videos, fastenings and expert customer support should you require. The railing is easy to install with just a drill, ruler and spirit level.

Customer questions about railings – part 3

27 April, 2023

Here you can find the third and final part of answers for the most common questions asked by our customers!

In the last part, we focused on questions that may arise in connection with the ordering, purchase and delivery of our railings. If you missed the previous parts, you can also find them here on the blog: Part 1 is about choosing a product and tailoring the design and in part 2 we discussed the installation and maintenance of railings.

I feel unsure on how to take the measurements, do I need to ask a professional to help?
– Our goal is to make choosing and installing our railings as easy as possible so you do not need to call in professional help. You only need to enter the dimensions of the outer edges of the surface where the railings will sit, for example corner to corner or edge to edge. To prevent the railings from sitting too close to the edge, we need to add a small amount of space, but this is done automatically and does not need your input.

In our design tool, there is guidance to help you and there are also measurement templates so that you can easily see how to undertake the work. You can also find these on our product pages under the technical information.

If you have any special requests or feel unsure, contact our customer service.

– On each product page you can find how many days the order usually takes to complete. When you have placed your order, you will find information about the expected delivery date in the order confirmation and we always dispatch promptly. You will also receive an email with information about tracking your order. When the order is ready, Schenker will contact you so that you can arrange a convenient delivery date.

What are the shipping costs?
– They are included! The price you receive when ordering covers all costs and no shipping or other hidden fees are added.

Do I have to be at home when the order arrives?
– It is important that someone is there to receive the delivery. Inspect the delivery and any signs of damage to your order should be recorded immediately with the driver, before you sign for receipt of the goods. This makes returns much easier, as the damage was documented before you signed for it. See our terms and conditions for more information.

The most common customer questions about railings – part 2

27 April, 2023

It’s time for the second part of our series where we have collected together the answers for many of the most common questions. This time too, we have enlisted the help of Natalia Lerulf, one of our most experienced and knowledgeable customer support staff.

This section will address the installation and maintenance of railings. If you have not seen part 1, which covered our models and optional features, you will find it here.

Some customers are not confident they can install a railing without professional help. How difficult is it really and what tools do you need?

You do not need a professional to install our railings if you are comfortable using a drill (we recommend using a drill even though it is possible to screw by hand) and a spirit level.

In addition to these tools, a rubber mallet is also helpful. We include all of the fastenings you need to complete the work, including screws and other parts. Should questions arise, you can always contact us for help.

What steps do I take when installing a railing?

Each order includes an installation guide which is specific to the product you purchased. This also includes a measurement template and a drawing of where your supports should be positioned in relation to each other according to the dimensions you specified when you ordered. The guide also serves as a delivery note, covering the details of your order.

In addition to the guide, you will receive access to videos that will take you through the installation, step-by-step. You can find the installation videos on your own order page, which you can access by clicking on the link in the order confirmation that you receive via email. On this page, you can click on the link for your railing, which will show various product details and videos detailing the installation process.

Which material requires the least maintenance?

A glass railing is longer-lasting than, for example, a wooden railing. Wood needs to be oiled, varnished or painted regularly to help preserve it A glass railing, on the other hand, only requires cleaning at regular intervals to look as good as new. If you are looking for a railing that is low maintenance, you should choose our railing with only glass.

When you buy a glass railing from Balustradestore, we also offer products that help to prevent dirt from adhering to the glass. This makes maintenance even easier.

What is the best way to take care of a glass railing?

Clean the panes of glass with an ordinary window cleaner if necessary. Wipe down the other elements such as handrails, bars or supports, with a soft cloth, lukewarm water and a mild detergent. Do not use abrasive products for any part of our models.

If you have wooden top rails or supports, you should treat them with wood oil or a similar product if the railing is outside. Repeat regularly depending on how exposed the railing is to the weather.

Maintenance of railings in glass, stainless steel, aluminium and wood

I ‘ve purchased a railing with aluminium details, how do I care for it?

Aluminium is basically maintenance-free. We recommend cleaning the surfaces with a soft cloth, lukewarm water and a mild detergent. You can use a small amount of acetone to remove oil, wax or similar substances from the railing. Never clean with acidic or alkaline agents and do not use abrasive treatments or products with abrasive qualities as this causes scratches on the aluminium.

Also, do not clean the aluminium on the hottest days of the year, as there is a greater risk of discolouration.

Can a stainless steel railing rust?

Yes, despite their name, stainless steel railings can actually rust if not maintained! This is mainly a problem if you have the railing outdoors. We recommend cleaning the railing 1-3 times a year, or more often if you live near the sea. Just like with aluminium, clean with a soft cloth, lukewarm water and a mild detergent.

Do not use abrasive products such as steel wool or metal brushes as they can scratch the railing, which reduces the material’s resistance to rust. If the stainless steel parts come into contact with metal particles from non-stainless steel sources, these particles must be removed as soon as possible as they rust and spread into the stainless steel.

How do I maintain the looks of my wooden stair handrail?

You can also use lukewarm water, a mild detergent and a soft cloth for wood handrails. You can use a fine sandpaper to remove splinters which may lift after the rail is cleaned for the first time.

If the handrail is outside, it must be treated with wood oil, for example. Depending on the exposure of the handrail to the weather, you may need to repeat the treatment over time. How often a wood rail needs treatment depends on the weather, the location and the wear and tear from use.

When you order a railing from us, you will receive detailed information on how to take care of your particular model.

Frequently asked questions about railings – part 1

27 April, 2023

When purchasing a railing, there are often many questions and here we have collected the most common queries from our customers to help you. The answer to your question might be here!

We have enlisted the help of Natalia Lerulf, one of our best customer support staff. The first section will focus on the railings and questions that may arise when choosing a product. If you don’t find an answer to your question here, contact customer support. You can also read the second section which covers the installation and maintenance of railings.

Many of our customers have a specific design in their mind and ask for tailored features to be added.
– At Räckesbutiken, we have no fixed measurements and all of our products are manufactured based on the specific dimensions required by the customer, and therefore everything we make is custom-made. The products and features on our webpages, however, are the range of models we offer. If, for example, you are interested in gates or railings for stairs, we do not, unfortunately, offer these as an option, but we are constantly working to develop new products to meet our customers needs.

Can you choose different heights on alternate sides of the railing?
– As a rule, different heights on alternate sides of the railing are something that falls outside our set models. We would like to help as much as we can, but as it requires some extra work, there may be an additional cost. Contact our customer support and we can help advise you further.

Which products are best suited for indoor and outdoor environments and what should you consider when choosing glass? Should I use tempered glass or not?
– All our products can be used both indoors and outdoors. Our aluminium railing shares the same surface quality as the mast of a sailboat, making it highly resistant to wear and tear. We adapt our railings to meet your requirements of indoor or outdoor use. Furthermore, it is your personal tastes that decides whether one of our designs can be used indoors our outdoors.

When it comes to choosing glass, we offer ordinary laminated and tempered laminated glass. Both meet the standard of safety glass, but the toughened version is used in areas where there is more traffic or where it is more vulnerable. Ordinary laminated glass is suitable for private residences, but this also depends on how the railing is to be used. If you know that the glass will be load-bearing (e.g. if you don’t have a top rail but still want to use it as support) or will be exposed to repeated external stresses (e.g. along the coast or in the mountains where there is often a strong wind), we recommend tempered glass. If you have a garden that is used for children’s sports such as football, and there is a glass railing at ground level, then we recommend the use of tempered glass 😉

Glass railing for terraces

Stainless steel glass stairwell railing

Our glass railing in stainless steel, just like our other railings, can be used both indoors and outdoors.

What does safety glass mean?
– The glass we supply for all our glass railings is 8.76 mm thick, laminated glass with ground and polished edges. Laminated glass is where two panes of glass have been glued together with a plastic film between them. The glass can still break, but remains in place without shattering everywhere. You can choose between clear glass, opal (frosted) and a grey tinted glass. As we mentioned above, we also have a toughened laminated glass for more demanding environments.

Are there rules for the height of railings?
– Yes, this depends on the specific country law and regulations.

Style advice
– We also receive many request for advice on styles, material choice, and the most suitable combination for a particular house, etc. All of these vary from person to person, but we are happy to help with advice as we have plenty of experience of delivering successful designs for a wide range of customers with different tastes. On our product pages you can view examples of our installed designs for inspiration:
